So I’ll sign this petition, but I don’t like how All Out doesn’t seem to acknowledge an important message the Ugandan protestors are trying to present here in the photograph that they’re using on their site— “Uganda’s gay ban is colonial hang-over.”
Can we please talk about how homosexuality, and all the homophobia that comes with it, is a Western invention? Can we talk about how coming ‘out’ doesn’t necessarily have any pertinence, meaning, or importance for non-Western people? Can we talk about how Western forms of self-expression aren’t universal?
By all means let’s try to stop the persecution of gays in Uganda, but let’s not place all the blame on ‘backwards’, “conservative”, ‘democracy-hating’ Ugandan politicians. Imperialism lives on.
